Taveuni lies to the north-east of Fiji's main island, Viti Levu, and is the third largest island in the archipelago. Taveuni is known throughout Fiji as the "Garden Island of Fiji". It has a beautiful blend of tropical rainforest, reefs, beaches, highlands, coconut plantations and mangroves in a paradise setting. Approximately 140km and a mere hour’s direct flight from the capital, Suva, Taveuni Island rises like an emerald-colored gem from the Pacific. It is a volcanic island with plenty of fertile volcanic soil and is the third largest island in the Fijian group of 332 islands.
Taveuni Island is one of the few places in the world that lie on the 180 degree meridian, the point at which one day turns into the next. Length of the island is around 42 kms and is about 15kms wide, at its widest point. Taveuni is a unique island in the Fijian group. Approximately a third of the island has been declared a World Heritage National Park , The Bouma National Park. Taveuni Island is unique in that it has escaped industrialization and maintained its charm and laidback character. It is a high altitude plant and a hike to the upper reaches of the island may well reveal this rare bloom in all its glory, and many more tropical secrets. Another rare species found only on Taveuni Island is the elusive Orange Breasted Dove which makes its home in the lush forests of the island. Intrepid forest walkers may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Fiji Ground Frog and the extremely rare and indigenous Crested Iguana -the only species of its kind.
